Tortolì

Situated in the heart of the Ogliastra area, Tortolì stands on a huge plain which extends towards the sea. Tortolì shares the role of capital of the Province of Ogliastra with Lanusei. The appeal of the territory is demonstrated by the numerous historic-artistic remains as well as all the natural wonders which make its coastline so distinctive. The origins of its name are not clear; one of the many theories translates the toponym as "Paese delle Tortore” (Village of the Turtle Doves), while another suggests that the name derives from Ilium, because it was founded by the fleeing Trojans; the Pisans then called the village "Tortohelie".
